Circular furniture production system that targets local engagement and material provenance.
With the UK currently importing 80% of its wood supply and with local companies importing 73% of their material input, the future of design is dependent on finding alternative approaches to our current material supply chains.
In collaboration with London tree surgeons and construction companies, this project explores how design can increase the use of domestic materials in furniture design whilst simultaneously benefitting the local ecology and economy. The business model proposes to use an inner-city closed-loop manufacturing system, to offer meaningful, crafts-based employment to the community.
The classic form harks back to traditional joinery, allowing the materials to form a clear narrative on place and communicate a unique interplay between the natural materials.
